Physical Wellness: Definition and Examples

Wellness is a holistic approach towards living a good, healthy, and satisfactory life. It is multidimensional and includes physical, emotional, spiritual, social, and intellectual aspects.

The current article aims at digging deeper into the physical dimension of wellness and clarifying what does physical wellness means.

What is Physical Wellness

Physical wellness means being able to care for your body
by consistently making healthy lifestyle choices.

Western University’s definition of wellness

Physical wellness is listening to and taking care of your body, a delicate balance between physical activity and nutrition, sleep routine, and healthy habits.

In other words, what physical wellness means is awareness about the importance of various aspects of everyday lifestyle habits for the longevity and quality of one’s life.

The physical dimension of wellness encompasses various areas of life. Many of our everyday habits are done automatically without putting much thought into the whys and hows of them or estimating the impact they have on how we feel both physically or mentally.

The physical dimension of wellness aims for awareness and conscious choices regarding the following aspects of our day-to-day habits:

  • how many hours do we sleep and what time do we go to bed,
  • how many times a day and what type of food do we eat,
  • how regularly and what type of physical exercise do we practice,
  • how often and what kind of hygiene habits do we perform,
  • how often and what type of harmful substances do we consume,
  • how often and what kind of harmful behaviors do we engage with,
  • how often and what kind of relaxation techniques or activities do we practice.

Why is Physical Wellness Important

The goal of physical wellness is to guarantee a better quality of life in all imaginable aspects of health, not only bodily but also mentally. The soma (the Greek word for “body”) is one entity and all its parts are interconnected, thus influencing our emotions and mood as well.

That’s why physical wellness is so important. It directly impacts our physical and mental state by:

  • improving overall health,
  • increasing energy levels,
  • alleviating stress,
  • preventing diseases,
  • decreasing anxiety,
  • boosting brain functioning, memory, and concentration.

Scientific studies have shown that being considerate about lifestyle habits and seemingly small day-to-day choices have a great impact on major life events such as undergoing terminal and chronic diseases, or psychological conditions and illnesses.

The University of Massachusetts Medical School points out the following benefits of physical wellness:

  • Prevents heart disease and stroke.
  • Lowers blood pressure and cholesterol.
  • Improves mood, boosts confidence, and enhances self-esteem.

All in all:

Regular physical activity has numerous positive benefits
in terms of physical and mental health
as well as on chronic illnesses and can result in a higher quality of life.

Physical wellness includes many different aspects of the physical and mental state of a person, such as quality of sleep, diet, exercise, rest, hygiene, and general lifestyle choices.

Some of the activities you can perform to ensure a better level of physical wellness are:

  • get enough sleep (6 – 8 hours a night) and try to keep a sleep schedule (what time you go to bed and what time you wake up in the morning) as strictly as possible;
  • eat a balanced diet, keeping fast food to a minimum, and trying to consume calories depending on your current (or desired) weight and the amount of physical activity you do;
  • be active and exercise at least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week;
  • just as important is the way you recharge and rest, so go to a massage, read a book, take a hike, meditate, or just watch some episodes of your favorite series;
  • keep good personal hygiene by showering daily, brushing your teeth twice a day, washing your hands regularly, but also seek out preventative medical care such as getting physical exams and going to the dentist;
  • minimize as much as possible or even try to fully quit the consumption of alcohol and cigarettes.

  • Go to sleep at 11 PM and wake up at 7 AM.
  • Perform strength training 5 times a week and incorporate stretching into your exercise routine.
  • Don’t eat fast food.
  • Include in your diet nutritious foods like salmon, blueberries, egg yolks.
  • Meditate for 20 minutes a day.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Do not drink alcohol.
  • And many many more.

Conclusion

The physical dimension of wellness is the most popular aspect of wellness in general. When we think of improving the quality of our life, the first thing to come to mind is what physical wellness encompasses. Those are what we eat, how we sleep, how active we are, what are the everyday habits and small vices we indulge in, such as smoking and drinking, etc.

While it is much easier living on autopilot without deliberately planning and controlling these areas of life, it is also true that putting the time and effort into optimizing our habits has plenty of benefits for longevity and quality of life.

The strengths of physical wellness are directly related to a better overall health state, improved mood, boosted confidence, and higher self-esteem, lower risk of injuries and chronic illnesses, better cognitive functioning, memory, and concentration.

Those are just to name a few so if you haven’t considered paying attention and deliberate thought into what is physical wellness, now is the time.
